Many different cultures, religions, political movements and individuals have created symbols of unity over the years to convey peace , harmony and reconciliation.
Early Christians used the dove and olive branch symbolically and it gradually became a secular peace symbol, popularised after World War II by Pablo Picasso. When it was chosen as the logo for the World Peace Congress in 1949, it became a modern symbol of peace. The symbol was introduced as a common sign of peace at the end of the 1960s, crossing national and cultural borders.
The vertical line in the middle represents the semaphor flag signal for the letter D and the semaphor signal for the letter N is represented by the downward lines on either side. "N" and "D" are enclosed in a circle for nuclear disarmament. The symbol was also identified by Holtom as reflecting desperation, with the central lines forming a human being challenging his hands on his sides against the backdrop of a white Earth. Holtom is said to have initially contemplated using a Christian cross, but hated its connexion with the Crusades and instead preferred something that he contemplated more universal.
